Physical addiction becomes a serious problem when the body becomes accustomed to the presence of the drug and can no longer function properly without it. If you’re heavily addicted and try to get sober on your own without medical assistance, you will likely experience extremely uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms are the result of the body sending confused messages to the different organs and muscles. It’s a coenzyme that plays an important part in the body’s production of energy, and when injected at high doses it’s thought to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It’s been found to help with rapid detox from substances including opiates, alcohol, cocaine, methadone and benzos. But for most people, staying sober isn’t that straightforward.

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), the relapse rate for drug and alcohol addiction is about 40-60%. Being involved in your partner’s recovery process can have a positive and lasting effect on their ability to move forward and keep your relationship moving in a healthier direction. There may be bumps along the way, such as relapses or broken promises, but multiple relapses and treatment episodes will erode trust—sometimes permanently. With all the focus on your partner’s recovery, you may ask, silently or aloud, “What about me? ” Now that things are less chaotic, less overwhelming, you may be surprised at the feelings that start bubbling up within you. Establish open lines of communication with one another and come up with a plan of action.

Finding ways to nurture your own mental health and wellbeing in sobriety is a top recommendation from therapists at Monument. This can include taking baths, journaling, meditating, or going to therapy. Not only will these self-nurturing activities make you feel better, but they also act as healthy coping mechanisms whenever a challenge or craving arises in your alcohol recovery timeline. Cutting back on or cutting out alcohol is an incredible step towards a healthier and more fulfilling life. One of the most common experiences Monument members share when they first stop drinking is that they have more free time, and more energy to fill it with.

The three basic steps of urge surfing:

Visit your local museum, watch an open mic comedy night, attend a local play or dance show, or see if there’s a jazz café in your area. Going out for a show can be the perfect weekend activity to make the night feel special and memorable. Hearing the stories of others can be an affirming and empowering way to spend your free time. There’s a large selection of “quit lit” about various authors’ journeys through recovery and sobriety. There’s also an exciting collection of sobriety podcasts to follow along with. These resources can help you discover new perspectives, and learn something new about sobriety every day.

Yes, pets are a responsibility, but caring for an animal makes you feel loved and needed. Think of a sandy beach, or a fond memory, such as your child’s first steps or time spent with friends. It’s a subversive, hardcore choice to take your life into your own hands. It’s an opportunity to grow into your bones, and every single crap thing that happens to you on the way only makes you stronger. So now I’m sober, and I have zero choice but to be me in all situations.

  • Boredom can be a relapse trigger in and of itself, so finding something to do in your free time can be a valuable tool in your sobriety kit.
  • Sobriety means not being under the influence of a substance.
  • Otherwise, a person is much more likely to relapse after getting sober.

While relapse is frustrating and discouraging, it can be an opportunity to learn from your mistakes, identify additional triggers, and correct your treatment course. Developing an addiction to drugs isn’t a character flaw or a sign of weakness, and it takes more than willpower to overcome the problem. Abusing illegal or certain prescription drugs can create changes in the brain, causing powerful cravings and a compulsion to use that makes sobriety seem like an impossible goal.
